Teaching Guide
Teaching Guide Introduction
Aim
This Curriculum Web has been designed to help fourth grade students to learn how to predict the weather outside. Students will develop an understanding for the concept of how weather is formed and how meteorologists predict the weather using the five senses and weather instruments.
Learning Goals
1.Subject Matter Standards
NYS science standards-
Standard 4: Science
Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.
Standard 5: Technology
Students will apply technological knowledge and skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems to satisfy human and environmental needs
4xix- make predictions based on prior experiences and/or information
2- Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies.
Core Curriculum Standards-
4.P2.1a- Weather is the condition of the outside air at a particular moment.
4.P2.1b- Weather can be described and measured by:
4.P2.1b.1 -Temperature
4.P2.1b.2 -Wind speed and direction
4.P2.1b.3 -Form and amount of precipitation
4.P2.1b.4 -General sky conditions (cloudy, sunny, partly cloudy)
2.Technology Standards
Creativity and Innovation
Communication and Collaboration
Research and Information Fluency
Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving and Decision-Making
Technology Operations and Concepts
Learning Objectives
Cognitive
After the lesson on weather and with the use of the Web quest students will:
-Gain content knowledge, application and comprehension skills to predict the weather in their everyday lives.
-Develop a further understanding of weather instruments and their use.
-Use technology to further enhance their learning throughout the weather unit.
Affective
At the end of the unit, students will
-Develop an appreciation for weather.
-Gain confidence to effectively predict weather in order to know how weather affects their lives and everyone around them.
Learner Descriptions
Students are around the ages of 8-10 years old, they are 4th grade students who live within an inner city and do not have regular access to technology. These students should have some prior knowledge about what weather is and some ability to use a computer. Students are from every level of learning ability will be able to complete this assignment.
Subject Matter Description
This curriculum web is centered on a subject centered curriculum and gives students the ability to use their knowledge of the weather and further investigate through the use of predicting weather for everyday use.
Prerequisites
Students should possess the following skills:
Be able to define weather and climate?
Know the effects of weather and how it changes our everyday lives.
Be able to make predictions about any certain thing in their lives.
Have prior knowledge of weather instruments (thermometer, rain gauge, etc.)
Read on a 4th grade level
Be able to use a computer
Rationale
Students will learn about predicting weather in order to understand what they need to wear on certain days. Will they need a short sleeve shirt on or rain boots to combat the rainy day? Little do students realize that they are predicting weather every day. They wear a coat in January because they predicted that because it was cold yesterday it is probably going to be cold tomorrow and I know that the season is winter. Students in the future will need to know the weather if they are taking a flight, a vacation or trip, planting in a garden and just for everyday small use. These are important skills that students will use out in the real world along with the use of technology to help aid them in predicting the weather. As students get out there on their own predicting things, not only weather will help in science courses and experiments and they will be predicting things on the job.
